How to make a green smoothie that tastes good.
I'm not here to try to turn you into a vegetarian (I’m not one), that’s up to you. But I am here to help you improve your life. To do that, I want to share with you this nutritional powerhouse known as the Green Smoothie.
Embraced by raw foodists and vegetarians for a wealth of health benefits, Green Smoothies are increasing in popularity. So you’re probably thinking, what’s a Green Smoothie? Well it’s pretty simple to be honest. They are smoothies with greens blended into them. A lot of people these days don’t get enough greens in their diet for one reason or another. Whether they don’t like the taste, don’t have the time, there’s trouble with digestion or they don’t know how to prepare them. The Green Smoothie fixes all of these.
Blended greens have their structure ripped apart, putting them in a pre-digested state, easing digestion. When fruit is added to the smoothie it takes on the fruit flavor, and the taste of the greens are masked by it. Throwing some greens into a blender is as easy and as fast as it gets.
So what's the big deal? Greens are loaded with amino acids, vitamins, minerals, fiber and chlorophyll. Chlorophyll and its derivatives are known to have antioxidant activity and many other health benefits, but that is out of the realm of this article. These smoothies are also a great way to get your kids to eat their veges.
You can put whatever you want into your smoothie as far as fruits and greens go. But if you're new to the whole idea, I suggest going with fresh spinach or kale. Both are extremely nutritious.
A simple good tasting Green Smoothie recipe is:1 handful spinach or 2-3 leaves of kale
1 Banana, Peeled
1/4 cup of berries
1-2 cups water (depending on consistency preference)
Protein powder (optional) - Hemp & Rice protein are great additions to smoothies. This is just a start. Eventually work up to higher quantities of the greens and use your favorite fruits and berries.
